A scenic region with a diverse landscape, Friuli is home to beautiful cities such as Cividale, Palamanova and Gorizia, as well as stunning castles, spectacular mountains, gently rolling hills and resplendent vineyards. Although situated on the very edge of Italy, it is at the heart of central Europe, with Austria, Slovenia and Croatia a short distance away. Agli Amici is located in the small village of Godia, a few kilometres from Udine, the historic capital of Friuli.

Agli Amici has been owned by the Scarello family since 1887 and continues to be popular with local residents of the town, as well as a destination restaurant for international visitors. The original pioneers of Agli Amici were Emanuele’s parents, who spent years researching the region and learning many of the traditional cooking methods that were used, as well as new techniques and practises. In turn, they have passed their knowledge down to their son Emanuele and daughter Michela.

Recently renovated, the restaurant’s interior design is minimalist and cosy, with quirky design features found throughout the building. Both the small garden and comfy lounge are perfect spots to enjoy an apéritif before being seated for dinner. A glimpse at the menu reveals dishes rooted in local tradition but made current and sophisticated by Emanuele’s creative cooking. As well as new creations, the menu includes many signature dishes such as Gnocchi gratin with herbs and garlic (a tribute to his family), Veal with pink powder anchovies, capers and crispy egg, and the Pasta ragu of the day — a local favourite. The desserts are the work of the restaurant's award-winning Japanese pastry chef, whose creations include Orange terrine with almond ice cream and Honey tart with camomile. There are two tasting menus, with or without local wines to match each course, and a full à la carte option.

Efficient and professional, the waiting staff are extremely knowledgeable and willing to explain each dish in detail. Still very much a family enterprise, Emanuele’s mother still works in the kitchen every day, while his sister Michela acts as the restaurant’s sommelier and front of house manager. Although the restaurant team has now grown considerably due to the restaurant's popularity and reputation, it has still retained its relaxed, family atmosphere.

    Three things you should know
    1
The tasting menus are creatively named, with the four course menu titled ‘The colours of the lagoon and of the countryside’ and the five course menu called ‘What is new is unforgettable!’
    2
Michela and Emanuele have created an incredibly extensive wine list to match the food on offer in the restaurant. Although focusing mainly on the region of Friuli, it also includes wines from around the world.
    3
The restaurant itself is located close to many of the prized vineyards and winemakers of Friuli, and tours and tasting can easily be arranged to complete your experience.
